Rabbi Andy Kahn, assistant rabbi at New York’s Temple Emanu-El issued a shocking tweet on July 7: “Let me say this as plainly as possible: Jews are not an indigenous people. It is appropriative to make use of this word when referring to our relationship to the land of Israel, and it undermines the difficult work being done to fix the ongoing oppression of indigenous peoples.”

As of this writing, the tweet was shared 1.8k times and liked 10.3k times. More senior rabbi, Rabbi Joshua M. Davidson, has repudiated his underling’s statement. One still wonders, however, how Kahn earned (and continues to maintain) his position. Has he even read the bible?
