Alice Walker is a renowned author known for her novel “The Color Purple,” which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1983. The novel was subsequently made into a movie, and is now debuting as a musical. Walker’s views on Israel and Jews, however, are decidedly unsavory—Walker is an out and out antisemite who trashes Israel every chance she gets. In an open letter, she expressed support for the controversial writer David Icke, who has been widely accused of promoting antisemitic conspiracy theories.

In the weeks since October 7, Walker has not only not expressed support for the victims of Hamas terror, but rather accuses these same victims—Israeli Jews—of committing genocide in Gaza. Given Walker’s endorsement of an antisemite, and her failure to condemn Hamas terror, many believe that she should not receive royalties for her books. Critics argue that financially supporting someone with such problematic beliefs goes against the principles of equality, justice, and tolerance.
