What are we to make of the following words
of Congresswoman Rashida
Tlaib?
“There’s always kind of a calming feeling I tell folks when I think of the
Holocaust, and the tragedy of the Holocaust, and the fact that it was my
ancestors — Palestinians — who lost their land and some lost their lives, their
livelihood, their human dignity, their existence in many ways, have been wiped
out, and some people’s passports. And just all of it was in the name of trying
to create a safe haven for Jews, post-the Holocaust, post-the tragedy and the
horrific persecution of Jews across the world at that time. And I love the fact
that it was my ancestors that provided that, right, in many ways. But they did
it in a way that took their human dignity away and it was forced on them.”
How do we begin to fix the lies and revisionist history? How do we find a way to look past someone who finds something heartening in the Holocaust, or sees it as the only reason the Jews have to claim their indigenous territory? How do we look past someone who feels calm when they think about the role their people played in the Holocaust, when those people actively fought alongside the Nazis?
One thing we can do is watch this footage about the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem’s collaboration with Hitler, May his name and memory be erased, and understand the truth, and not as Tlaib would have us believe: lies upon lies upon lies.
